Attack v Defence A Tactical Analysis

Second in the League One table. The most total goals scored in the division. The most home goals scored in the league. The top two scorers in League One. The best second half form of any team in the division. A great start. The most goals conceded in League One. The second worst Anders Lee Men Jerseyfirst half form in the division. Dodgy away form highlighted by loses to Tranmere and Hartlepool. There are still too many problems.Poshs start falls into two categories. If youre an optimist you will have seen a free-scoring, entertaining, side climb to second in the table playing some great attacking football. The more pe simistic fans will be thinking how a side, which leaks goals, and is so inconsistent, is second in the table. The Swindon game this weekend is a perfect example of this great attacking, poor defending and overall inconsistancy that has been a part of Poshs play so far this season. The first goal against Swindon shows just how little width the team often have as most Johnsons first choice wingers like to drop insidehere, Boyd (pink), is making his usual run into the centre of the pitchthis means that both full-backs need to be able to run forward and attack. In this instance Mark Little (red) is providing Poshs width andDustin Tokarski Women Jersey eventually gets the a sist for the first goal of the game. With so many men forward it is obviously destructive, especially at this level, and Swindon are drawn into the centre of the pitch (in this example they have 6 men in a small area) and this provides the space for Little to attack.Again, on the third goal, Poshs attacking shape is very narrow. Arron Davies (red) was pre suring the goal-keeper, after he had drifted over to the left hand side of the pitch, and this pre sure made the Swindon keeper fluff his kick. As soon as McLean got hold of the ball Boyd (pink) has instinctively cut inside as well. At this moment Craig Mackail-Smith (blue), who played the ball into McLean, is Peterboroughs widest outlet and he is in a fairly central position anyway. With George Boyd (pink) being so central here Kevin Amakwaah (red) has been given aJosh Bailey Women Jersey huge amount of space to run into with the ball. The full-back takes full advantage of this and sets upSwindons first goal with a good cro s. This shows just how exposed, at times, Poshs full-backs are and here Tommy Rowe is left one-on-one to deal with Amakwaah he, as shown by the shadows in the picture, is already marking David Ball, the eventual goal-scorer, and due to him having to close down Amakwaah this leaves Ball with far too much room to turn and finish. Note also the gap between Grant McCann (blue) and the defence. If ever there was a perfect example to show the weakne ses in Peterboroughs system Swindons fourth goal was it. Here 7 Posh players are within a very small radius, marking just 3 Swindon Town players, and a simple floating ball in leads to Charlie Lee giving a penalty away. Both Nana and Little, on the far left on the picture, are markingJosh Bailey Men Jersey the same bit of space. Ideally Nana should be pushed further on but, as he is a natural full-back playing in central midfield at the time, he has instinctively dropped into this position that Little already has covered. For the winning goal Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (blue) has finally provided Posh with some width and this run has drawn three Swindon Town defenders into marking him. Again, Boyd (pink) Anthony Beauvillier Men Jersey has drifted from the left wing over to the right hand side and thisrun leaves Mackail-Smith (not in the picture) in space on the left-hand side. Once Mendez-Laing puts the ball into the box Amakwaah, on the far left of the picture, realises the danger of Mackail-Smith and panics by putting the ball into his own net. With this sort of formation being deployed by Gary Johnson, Posh will naturally score a lot of goals as there are so many Peterborough United players in the opposition half. However, due to this gun-ho strategy The Posh will be very exposed to the counter attack, as has been evident already this season. Still, its going to be very entertaining and if we continue to score one more than the opposition few can complain.
